There is no single official term addressing that issue, because “most dangerous” can refer either to the most accidents happening, the highest collision rate adjusted according to traffic volume, as well as the highest number of fatalities and serious injuries.

Taking into account up-to-date D.C. accident statistics and taking into account the numbers of accidents and their severity, New York Avenue NE and Bladensburg Road NE junction is one contender for the title, which is a large intersection with highway type traffic volumes, complicated turns and danger to pedestrians, bikers and travelers.

D.C.’s public crash dataset records crash locations throughout the District but does not designate a single intersection as the city’s official “most dangerous” intersection.

The intersection of New York Avenue NE with Bladensburg Road NE is among the places in D.C. which has seen a number of accidents over the years with the number of accidents recorded at approximately 222 from 2023 to 2025. Large-sized traffic, multiple turns of traffic and hazards created for the pedestrians in the area are some of the problems faced by the busy intersections in D.C.

What the Recent Numbers Show

A study of the public accident-location data of D.C. showed that between 2023 to 2025, around 222 accidents were reported in proximity (within 250 feet of the crossing). The yearly breakdown of the report states that in the year 2023 (97 accidents), 2024 (67 accidents), 2025 (58 accidents) the average rate of accidents comes to approximately 1 accident every five days in this three-year period.

The accidents resulted in over six major injuries and approximately sixty-eight minor injuries according to the summaries. In 2024 alone, five of the major injuries took place.

There were no deaths taking place in the limited area from 2023 to 2025 and this indicates that an area can consistently be at a high-risk location and have a low number of deaths.

The crossing records also seem to have a high level of significance, as compared to the records of other crossing candidates. For example, Fifteenth street and Massachusetts Avenue NW registered six major injuries or fatalities within the same period, while at the same time there were only around 26 road accidents at those points.

New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road, by comparison, recorded a similar number of serious injuries but more than eight times as many collisions overall.

Why This Junction Is So Difficult

New York Avenue operates as a major urban highway rather than as a normal city street. It is responsible for carrying all the traffic including commuter, commercial and regional traffic between Washington, the Interstate 295 highway, the U.S. Route 50 road, and Prince George’s County.

Bladensburg Road is also an important trunk road and a thoroughfare for trucks. Earlier D.C. transportation analysis has also identified New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road as a high-crash intersection.

When arriving at an intersection, motorists face the challenges of several lanes, vehicles changing lanes, turning vehicles, signals, and many closely-spaced access points. Drivers of large vehicles have to perform wide turns while facing the challenge of a significant blind zone.

A higher speed before the intersection also creates problems for the driver: the driver has less time to react and the energy of the impact grows. Congestion brings about yet another danger when drivers tend to drive through changing signals and follow each other too closely or make abrupt lane changes to avoid the traffic.

Due to the context both drivers and pedestrians face the risk of injury while travelling on the same asphalt surface. Travelling across a wide boulevard may be lengthy, which means there will be more lanes and thus potential threats.

A driver might yield in one lane and hide a pedestrian from the driver in the adjacent lane, who could then hit the crossing pedestrian. Hence, the issue of pedestrian safety cannot be solved just by creating particular designs of street junctions.

Why Other Intersections Sometimes Rank First

Various studies produce different result. An old traffic-normalized study named Grant Street NE and Minnesota Avenue NE number one in accidents per 100,000 vehicles.

At the same time, the same report indicated that Minnesota Avenue SE and Pennsylvania Avenue SE had the highest number of total accidents (35) within a four-month period.

Recent data from the governing data may indicate another specific spot on Eastern Avenue NE at Southern Avenue NE when ranking incidents. However counting incidents in this way can be very misleading since based solely on number of collisions we cannot tell the particulars of each incident.

One incident can be very serious while others light.

The problem of geocoding exists, too. Washington’s data set identifies crash locations along the District’s roadway network, and the associated crash details are maintained separately.

Changing the radius of the analysis may move a considerable number of crashes from one intersection to a neighbouring corridor. Records lacking full location description may not show at all.

The Broader Safety Failure

The situation at the intersection reflects a pattern seen in the rest of Washington D.C. Traffic deaths in D.C. were 52 in 2023 and in 2024 compared with 27 in 2019.

Fatalities dropped to 25 in 2025, but by August 13, 2026, the city had recorded 27 deaths already that year, an increase of 125 % compared with the same date a year earlier.

New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road is therefore one reasonable answer if we think of danger as frequent incidents with serious consequences. However, the main point is methodological: D.C. doesn’t have one “worst” intersection at which accidents happen.

It has a range of busy intersections that systematically turn ordinary human errors into collisions and injuries.
